Astana shows interest in cycling

16-07-2012

The capital city of Kazachstan Astana has given her name to one of the best cycling racing teams in the world. Astana also shows interest in becoming a cycling city. The vice mayor confirmed this during a visit by a team of Dutch experts from the Cycling Embassy, invited by   Dutch ambassador in Kazachstan mr.van Leeuwen.

The city developed a Masterplan to guide urban planning till 2030 on a large scale with multi-lane one-way roads for cars, separate lanes for public transport and green zones with trees. Traffic planning and a planning for human scale is missing. Cycling routes are designed in a way that they mainly seem to have a recreational purpose. But the city is open for a plan for utilitarian cycling. The team showed which opportunities exist to develop Astana into a modern sustainable city. The Dutch ambassador Van Leeuwen will follow up the conclusions with the governors of the city. The Cycling Embassy proposes a workshop to outline a policy plan with a network of high quality bike provisions.
