Aalborg is located in northern Jutland of Denmark. It is a growing university city and has its roots as an industrial city. It has a population of about 112,000 people, making it the fourth largest city in Denmark. Today, Aalborg is a city in transition from a working-class industrial area to a knowledge-based community. The topography is mostly flat, with some hilly areas. The weather is mixed, with rainy and windy winters.

Aalborg has a great foundation of cycling culture and organizational structure. The plans for a new bicycle parking facility and strategy shows that the city is dedicating money and resources to bicycle facilities. The city is also implementing integrating bicycle lessons in schools on cycling safety and maintenance to promote children cycling to school. The city can focus its efforts on the cycling hardware and increasing the safety and connectivity of the cycling network. Cycling modal share is 14% comparing to 52% of car modal share. Therefore, more push factors from the motorized mobility can also be in favour for more cycling mobility.

Aalborg has mostly segregated cycling paths, however the network does not have the maximum potential coverage. There are bicycle parking spots near shops and businesses, which are mostly outdoor bicycle racks. The city has plans to increase the capacity of bicycle parking near transportation hubs, and is developing a new bicycle parking strategy throughout the city. There are some bicycle detection loops in intersections, to give the green light to cyclists. The city also has several IT points for bicycle counting or for informing expected travel time to a destination by bicycle.
There are all types of cyclists in Aalborg, including sport cyclists, commuters and students. All cyclists ride on the dedicated cycling paths. There is a mix of both women and men who cycle in the city. Wearing a helmet is not required by law, and about less than half of cyclists wear a helmet. There are also several cycling events per year, such as Sustainability Week which promotes cycling and provides cycling information. The Danish Cycling Association also organizes bicycle rides several times per year.
Orgware is also strong in Aalborg. Cycling is in the city’s masters plan, there is a dedicated budget, and the city has a person who is responsible for mobility decisions. There is also a strong initiative to integrate cycling in primary and secondary schools. For example, they have a week-long program where bicycle maintenance and bicycle safety is taught. This program is intended to promote children cycling and teach them to be safe cyclists. There are also several cycling advocacy groups, such as the Danish Cycling Association, which are included in cycling decisions. In addition, the city undertakes an extensive marketing for cycling.
