ThinkBike Workshops Milwaukee & Detroit

Last week, two ThinkBike Workshops were held by the Dutch Cycling Embassy in the U.S.

We started in Milwaukee on October 31st and November 1st  and proceeded within the same week in Detroit on November 2nd and 3rd . Together with two special selected experts, Arie Vijfhuizen, senior advisor at Royal HaskoningDHV, and Angela van der Kloof, senior advisor at Mobycon, an intensive program was set up together with the local municipalities. Combining two different types of cycling experts, together with the brief time frame (in this case 2 days per city, normally a 3 ,4 or 5 day workshop) resulted in a broader context, with less detailed road designs, but very suitable designs for these  specific cities.

Within each program Mirjam Borsboom, director of the Dutch Cycling Embassy, started with a general overview and context of Dutch cycling. Using hardware, software, and orgware, municipalities are able to identify on which aspects they are possibly already working on and which aspects could deserve more attention.  For example, the city of Milwaukee already has a well functioning bike sharing system, called Bublr. While Detroit will implement their bike sharing system within 2017 (expected). Cycling expert Arie Vijfhuizen continued the workshops with presentations on Cycling Networks, CROW requirements, and streetscape design, resulting in many curious questions after which interesting discussions evolved.

As a result of the declining automobile industries, both cities are experiencing challenging aspects within everyday life. Angela van der Kloof , shared her vision on the importance of a cycling mindset, including education, inclusiveness and developments within the cycling world. On both days, attendances needed to fulfill several assignments, especially on network design of a specific study area.

On the second day, fieldwork to these study areas was part of the program, during which, many discussions lead to a better understanding of local stakeholders. Some key words from the fieldwork included: “inspirational”, “resulting in better stakeholder relationships”, “getting the city to the next step” and many more.
