Portland State University Visits Delft

On Thursday, July 3rd, the Dutch Cycling Embassy hosted a group of students from Portland State University’s Transportation Research and Education Centre, who were participating in a two-week study abroad program entitled “Sustainable Transportation in the Netherlands”.

After an hour-long presentation at Delft City Hall by Jan Nederveen, Strategic Advisor for the City of Delft, the group of ten students, and two faculty hopped on their bikes for a two-hour tour. There they saw a number of Delft streets that had been redesigned and retrofit, with Mr. Nederveen providing valuable insight into the planning and engagement process.

Following a quick lunch in the historic centre of Delft, the group cycled to the Dutch Cycling Embassy headquarters, where Marketing Manager Chris Bruntlett provided an overview of cycling in the Netherlands, the role of the Dutch Cycling Embassy overseas, and specific examples of global cities attempting to transfer these policies and ideas to their context.

We wish these students the best of luck in their challenge of applying these lessons to American cities.
