THINK: How to make cycling possible

Are you convinced of the Dutch principles of cycling inclusive mobility? Would you like to improve cycling in your local community? The Dutch Cycling Embassy can help realize achievable solutions customized for your specific community needs.

We first assess the hardware, software and orgware levels of your community.

  • Hardware: physical elements of the built environment – infrastructure
  • Software: mental and virtual elements – ideas, plans, policies, programs, laws
  • Orgware: organizational and institutional elements – administrations, governments

Next we match your community needs with the most suitable program such as Keynote speakers, ThinkBike Workshop, Cycling Fellow Program, Master Class Cycling and Round Table. These programs are designed to help conceptualize solutions to overcome the challenges facing the bike-ability of your community.

  • Keynote speakers

    Our bicycle experts are available to deliver keynote speeches at conferences and seminars all over the world. The DCE makes sure it connects you with the right Dutch bicycle expert who can customize his presentations to the needs of your city or your country. This could involve: accessibility, design, bike safety, livability, sustainability, economic benefits, health, marketing, network issues, etc.

  • ThinkBike Workshop

    A team of two or three Dutch experts visits a foreign city where they get together with the local decision makers and planners for two days. The workshops are intensive, interactive and hands-on. The format is as follows:

    After a public plenary introduction of the Dutch approach to transportation, a particular site or sites in the host city are identified by the local experts to be the focus challenge of the workshop. The group is divided into teams (each with both Dutch and local experts representing a variety of interests) that will work in parallel to come up with solutions for the presented challenge. Teams will visit the sites by bicycle and explore solutions that span practice and theory. These solutions are presented with drawings, photographs, designs, and a marketing strategy in a lively public session at the end of the second day, in the presence of key stakeholders, including elected officials, politicians, press and anyone interested in the future of sustainable transportation in the city.

  • Cycling Fellow Program

    The Cycling Fellow program is designed to make a (foreign) city more bike-friendly. Cities that like to qualify for this program are connected with a qualified Dutch Cycling Fellow by the DCE. The program entails three visits.

    - A two-day visit of one (or two) Dutch bike experts to a qualifying city. During that time they are shown around by city representatives to experience the local bike culture and are made aware of the city’s mobility policies that are in place and the city’s ambitions;
    - Next, a delegation of the city will bring a visit to the Netherlands for several days where they will visit two different Dutch cities to learn about the Dutch biking culture and the various facilities. Background information will be provided of how the Dutch bike culture developed over the years;
    - Concluding, the Dutch fellow(s) will visit the (foreign) city again. This time the mutual lessons learned from both earlier visits will be combined with an emphasis to make the qualifying city more bike-friendly. Both city representatives and the cycling fellows will see how successful Dutch bike policies can be translated into the fellow city under the watchful eye of the Dutch bike expert.

  • Master Class Cycling

    DCE can organize master classes for cycling experts or professionals with a focus on urban mobility and bike accessibility. A customized program can be made with your input. The main goal of the master classes is to share knowledge, with an emphasis on a combination of scientific and practical bike knowledge. Historical background is provided on the development of the Dutch bike culture, its biking policies as well as its bike infrastructure. In addition, we take a look at the current Dutch situation and the challenges we are now faced with. During the master class, theory will be translated into practice based on case scenarios provided by the participating group. Master classes can be given both in the Netherlands or abroad. The master classes will be designed in coordination with the Dutch Cycling Academy.

  • Round Table

    The Netherlands has a very long tradition of developing and implementing policies in consultation with all parties and stakeholders involved. This also pertains to implementing bike policies, providing guidance on implementing bike manuals in co-production with relevant stakeholders and NGO’s or setting up information centers. For this purpose, DCE has developed a Round Table session. During this session relevant stakeholders in cities and regions will get expert advice and guidance on how to structurally involve the bike communities and advocacies in the process of implementing bike policies.
